Amoxicilline clavulaanzuur 500/125mg is an antibiotic that works by killing the bacteria that cause the infection. It contains a combination of two active ingredients, namely amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. Amoxicillin belongs to a group of medicines called ‘penicillins’, which can sometimes be made ineffective (inactive). The other active ingredient (Amoxicilline clavulaanzuur 500/125mg) prevents this from happening.
How Does Amoxicilline clavulaanzuur 500/125mg Work?
Amoxicilline clavulaanzuur 500/125mg is distributed throughout the body through the blood after ingestion. So it gets everywhere. Because it kills different types of bacteria, it can be used for many infections. Since clavulanic acid has been added to the active ingredient amoxicillin, the effect is enhanced. Clavulanic acid prevents the breakdown of amoxicillin by some bacteria, killing even more types of bacteria.
How is Amoxicilline clavulaanzuur 500/125mg used and what is the dose?
Amoxicilline clavulaanzuur 500/125mgcomes in tablets of 500/125mg and 875/125mg. Your doctor will prescribe the correct dose for you. Dissolve the tablet in a glass of water, stir well and drink the glass empty. You should divide your intake over the day. If you miss a dose, do the following: take the dose if your next dose is more than 4 hours away. A course of treatment lasts 5 to 14 days. Always complete the course, even if the symptoms of the infection have disappeared. It is important to drink enough.
When should you not use Amoxicillin/Clavulanic acid?
If you are hypersensitive to any of the ingredients in Amoxicilline clavulaanzuur 500/125mg, you should not take this medicine. If you have a kidney problem or a serious condition, talk to your doctor before taking Amoxicillin/Clavulanic acid. If you are taking anticoagulants that inhibit vitamin K, for example acenocoumarol, your clotting needs to be measured extra, because the effect of the anticoagulation is enhanced. Moderate use of alcohol is allowed. There are no known harmful effects on pregnancy and Amoxicillin/Clavulanic acid can be used if you are breast-feeding. Driving is allowed.
What are the possible side effects of Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid?
Amoxicilline clavulaanzuur 500/125mg may cause side effects. Contact your doctor if you develop severe diarrhea or abdominal cramps. Amoxicillin/Clavulanic acid often gives a dry mouth. Mucous membranes of the mouth, vagina or anus can also become inflamed.
If you develop a skin rash with shortness of breath, fever and sometimes fainting, you must stop taking it immediately and inform your doctor.
Important to know about amoxicillin with clavulanic acid
- Amoxicilline clavulaanzuur 500/125mg kills bacteria (antibiotic). Clavulanate makes amoxicillin work better.
- In infections of the lungs, trachea, throat, sinuses, middle ear, bladder and kidneys. And with deep skin infections (for example, due to bite wounds), erysipelas, glaucoma and infections of bones and joints.
- Within a few days, your symptoms will subside.
- Do you use the tablets or dissolving tablets? Take it with half a glass of water. Take the tablets well spread over the day. It then works better.
- Are you using the drink? Shake well before use. Use a measuring cup or measuring spoon to measure out the correct amount.
- You may get diarrhea or stomach cramps. This is normal and will go away on its own. Do you have diarrhea with abdominal cramps several times a day? Then notify a doctor. Drink plenty of fluids if you have diarrhoea, otherwise you will become dehydrated
